Much has been written about the future of universities. One can safely assume that experts will continue to present their views concerning this important issue in a bid to inform and enlighten policymakers as well as the public. In this paper, we try to deal with some aspects of the future of universities not much discussed by other researchers. Following a brief introduction to one of the important issues related to the higher education systems, i.e., the issue of conceptual changes, developments in the social and cultural contexts, and technological advances all in relation to higher education, we turn our attention to the problem of the decline of current models of university. We next discuss the impact of emergent (NBIC) technologies on the modes of teaching in future. In the last section we provide our own account of the future of the university in Iran and highlight some of the conditions necessary for its realization.

The present research studies the pattern of the Internet usage by the third grade students of middle schools in the school year 2012-13 in Tehran. For this purpose, the needs of Iranian teenagers in virtual and cyber space have been identified and studied through an interdisciplinary approach. A researcher-made questionnaire and interviews with specialists and scholars in the fields of curriculum planning, educational technology, educational planning, information technology and communication were used based on an interdisciplinary approach. Finally, the needs of the students were divided and categorized into two factors of knowledge and skill, and individual and social characteristics on the basis of factor analysis method; the pattern of the Internet usage, including leisure factors and accessibility to information and sources, was designed and presented. Also, the results indicate that these factors have no direct effect on the network features and this effect occurs in relation to leisure factors through the location of the programs. Students’ interest in the Internet was mainly for the purposes of downloading videos and music and also playing online games and entertainment programs. This implies the necessity of attention on the part of planners to preparing and providing videos, games and educational, scientific and entertaining programs.

Establishing and expanding the Interdisciplinary Higher Education has been one the major concerns and programs of the Ministry of Science between 1385 and 1388. A brief look at the programs, activities and results of establishing and expanding the “Interdisciplinary Higher Education” plan shows that the universities, Scientific Community, and even relevant staff of the Ministry of Science have been reluctant towards the plan. This approach is generally due to lack of conceptual quality and practical context, not being dependent to the requirements of the national environment, incompatible with the social and knowledge context, and specifically due to preferring the Interdisciplinary education to research, unavailability of the teacher-content, and unclear pattern of the Interdisciplinary education. Considering the origin and source of the idea of the Interdisciplinary knowledge, this paper tries to study the barriers which prevent moving from the Discipline-Based Education to the Interdisciplinary Education and Learning, in the context of expanding the frontiers of knowledge, new learning approaches and special emphasis on the experience of Iran. Then, two patterns of Discipline-Based Education and Interdisciplinary-Based Education will be compared and the features of the Interdisciplinary Education will be discussed. In the end, some plans for improving and changing the process of Interdisciplinary Education and the pattern of E-Learning and Web-Based Learning as a new and effective capacity for achieving the Interdisciplinary goals will be studied.
